The recommended spacing from the gate to the heat source (stove, fireplace, etc.) is twenty inches. We installed this around a Harman XXV pellet stove, and the as-supplied length of the fence was not enough to achieve the twenty inches. Other panels are available, but I didn't bother buying them because the pellet stove doesn't get super hot.

This gate is very sturdy and durable. Since it mounts to the wall with screws, it is very secure. It looks nice, especially in black. I feel very safe having my 14 month old daughter around it. The handle is easy to open and the gate swings both ways. A great product!

I'm rarely impressed by a product, but this one is certainly impressive. We bought this to keep our baby away from a free-standing pellet stove. The standard length is OK. Ideally I would add another panel or more, in order to get the fence to the recommended 20 inches away from the stove (it's closer than that). However, our pellet stove runs very cool - you can touch it with your hand anywhere...

We bought this to keep our baby away from a free-standing pellet stove. The standard length is OK. Ideally I would add another panel or more, in order to get the fence to the recommended 20 inches away from the stove (it's closer than that). However, our pellet stove runs very cool - you can touch it with your hand anywhere except the front glass. If we had a real wood stove, I would definitely get another panel or two, just to be sure.

Made in Denmark, quality metal fencing with plastic pivots, all colored a matte black or dark grey-black. Our pellet stove is "charcoal" color and the color of the fence is a good match. Wall brackets are a flexible black plastic. Wall brackets have multiple screw points, which allows for a lot of flexibility.

Shipped as a folded-up fence, the fence was essentially fully-assembled upon arrival. Unfold it and attach it to the wall and you're done. The attachments for the wall are very well designed and easy to mount and align. Since our mantle is a cheaper, painted wood mantle, I just screwed it into that. If you're going into drywall, or into masonary, be prepared to do a bit more work. However, that's not due to any defect in the HearthGate design.

This product wasn't particularly cheap, but was certainly worth the money. We paid $164.49, with free shipping. I highly recommend it.
