Mad MAX
Puntos Fuertes: Dvd Region X, some USB flash drive support, online updates for codes
Puntos Débiles: some USB flash drive support(did not work with my off-brand USB), Slow boot up time
Resumen: I did not use the AR MAX too long, as it did not fit my needs. I used the cheat functionality a few times, and it worked fine, although the boot up time seemed interminable(probably 45-60 seconds?) Unfortunately this version of the AR MAX(30,000+ codes) did not have a good USB FLash drive support. It was not able to recognize my generic usb key drive, so I did some research and gave the codebreaker from pelican? a try (PL-650), and that was able to suit my needs. The AR MAX does have the DVD Region X feature, which allows you to play any region DVDs. I did not get a chance to test, as I only have region 1 dvds. I did not dare attempt the compression features that the AR MAX offers, as using compression technology is an invitation to squander all those hours spent gaming. The AR MAX is okay for a standard cheat device, however if you need to get files onto your PS2 memory card from your computer, I would say get a newer version, or the codebreaker(pl-650) or newer for better USB support

Puntos Fuertes: 50,000+ codes and cheats. Website allows more codes to be added to database. Built in data management system; allows burned DVDs to play on the PS2; allows other video formats to play on system;
Puntos Débiles: Data Management System can be shaky at times...possibility of losing saved games
Resumen: The Action Replay Max is a very nice product. I originally purchased this for its cheating capabilities. I enjoy the challenge of a video game, but sometimes after a stressful day, I just want to let loose and do anything I want. This product definitely gives you that option. With close to 50,000 codes already embedded into the CD, plus the ability to add codes that can be found on their website, every game available for the Playstation 2 can be modified to your liking.
After purchasing this product however, I was unaware of the AR Max’s other abilities. This product is not only a PS2 cheat system, but it also manages your memory cards and allows you to play burned DVDs and CDs on the PS2. This alone is worth the price. I often struggled with having to manage my memory cards whenever I began playing a new game. The cards themselves are rather expensive, so I was either deleting old saved games, or saving my money for a new card. The AR Max has the ability to compress your data so that more games can fit on a standard memory card. The AR Max allows you to play .mpg files as well on your PS2. It’s not an important feature, but a nice novel one that just adds to the life of this product.
This deal was a great buy for me. I use it all the time now, especially for my memory cards. One bit of warning though, and this is the only reason why it did not get a perfect score, is to be careful with the memory card management system. Before compressing your files, have a backup of your games, just in case something goes wrong. While I was compressing my files, something happened, and I lost data from four of my saved games. It’s not a huge loss, but it could have been disastrous in another situation. Just be careful. Overall however, this product is worth the money, and it’ll add some life to your old PS2 games.

Action Replay Max
Puntos Fuertes: Thousands of codes, memory card compression, DVD playback, online updates.
Puntos Débiles: Does not work with some PS2 models, cheating is wrong.
Resumen: I remember the old days of galore. Me and my NES, along with my trusty Contra game, spent many long nights together. But alas, it wasn't meant to be. I kept dying during the fifth level, and she was getting bored with me. That's when I met her. Game Genie. I'm not going to lie; she seduced me, but she didn't have to try. I wanted her myself. She promised me infinite lives, unlimited ammo... that I'd finally be able to play with power. With her help, I conquered Contra. Contra wanted me to take her back, but it was already too late. I've tasted victory, and now I couldn't settle for less. How could I go back? I deserved more. And I got it. I went on to conquer many more games with Lady Game Genie on my side.
But the times were changing. It wasn't long before I got tired of Game Genie. She always delivered the goods. Always promised that she'd make me happy, but honestly, it was never as good as the first. The magic was gone. Extra lives and more ammo weren't enough for me; I wanted more. I wanted downloadable game saves, region-free DVD playback, memory card compression... and that's when I met my new mistress - Action Replay Max. The she-devil promised me all of it. She promised to do all that, plus other things Game Genie wouldn't do for me.
It sounded good to me at the time, but now I wish I never strayed. I saw her on and off a couple of times. While I was seeing her, I also went out with Gameshark and Codebreaker. I liked them better too, so why I threw it all away for Action Replay is beyond me.
Action Replay made many promises, and she kept them all more or less, but I wasn't satisfied with her performance. The foreplay was horrible: it would take her four or five minutes to warm up, and then she actually had to load up the codes. I told her to take her time, but in the back of my mind, I just wanted to get it over with. The codes themselves are ho-hum at best. I got the basics like unlimited lives and invincibility for the more popular games, but content was neglible for some of the lesser-known games. That's when I learned her dirty little secret: her codes are encrypted so that you can't use them in other cheat devices. I don't know if she still does that, but this didn't allow me to enter my own values, modify memory addresses, etc. What I'm trying to say is that she didn't allow me to create my own codes. I had to use her codes. I had to follow her rules. Sometimes I like it when she dominates, but this isn't one of those cases.
What's worse is that I don't know if I could trust her. I don't know if she would delete my games saves or crash my games, because she's a... third-party peripheral. Oh God, please don't let her mother read this. I didn't have to worry about those kinda things with Game Genie because I could always reset and try again if the game crashed, but Action Replay puts a lot of pressure on me. I want to trust her, but when my hours and hours of game saves are on the line, sorry, but baby's got to go.
I had a good time with Action Replay while it lasted. I still see her from time to time, and we'll say hi and talk a while, but I think my journey to the seedier side of gaming is over. I've had enough of the lies, the cheating, the deception... I just want to play my games now.

Puntos Fuertes: Great all around cheat device. Excellent website for codes to newly released games. Easy to use.
Puntos Débiles: have not found any yet
Resumen: The Action Replay Max is an excellent Cheat Device for the PS2. It comes loaded with tons of codes and can have newer codes added. This cheat disk also allows you to watch any region DVD on your PS2. There is also a memory manager that allows you to save even more game saves on your memory card but this feature supposedly does not work well. All in all, this is a great little cheat device that I am very happy with.

Puntos Fuertes: Plays all region movies. Tons of codes. Power Saves.
Puntos Débiles: None
Resumen: This is a nice product. It plays DVD movies from any region, has a massive amount of codes, and the power saves are awesome! Power Saves can be used to unlock a ton of content that you may never find no matter how much you play the game. One issue is that the codes that are pre-installed are from older games, and you'll need a network adapter to download cheats and power saves from newer games.

Puntos Fuertes: Many ways to get cheat codes for games.
Large selection of games and cheat codes to choose from.
Not very expensive.
Puntos Débiles: Long loading times, especially if you have a large code database.
Any extras that come with AR Max never seem to work properly, such as the max memory cards.
Resumen: I purchased the AR Max to add life to games that I have already beaten, but haven't found every secret/unlockable. I don't have online access for my PS2, which seems to be the fastest and easiest way to update the codelist. So, as per the instruction booklet, I tried to burn the newest codelist to a cdr and use that to update the AR Max, but after burning like 7 cd's I could not get it to work even after calling the customer service line for help. I realized that I could download the codelist to a USB flash drive, plug it into my PS2 and transfer it to my PS2 memory card. I did it and it worked like a gem. Ever since I have been enjoying all of my old games using the massive amounts of codes that the AR Max has. I love this accessory and I recommend it to everyone.

Puntos Fuertes: Over 50K cheat codes, USB flash drive and CD-R support, region-free DVD support, inexpensive to purchase
Puntos Débiles: Dated codes, load times, newer game codes require network adapter/PC and online connection, save compression can be tricky, doesn't include memory card
Resumen: Cheat devices like Action Replay, Game Shark, Code Breaker, etc. have been around for various systems for years now. Because new versions of said software are released periodically, it becomes all the more important to know exactly what you're looking at if you're considering a purchase.
The version of Action Replay Max that we're considering came out between 2002 and 2004, but be careful to pick up the more recent 2004 model (both have the same UPC) because it includes 20K more cheat codes on the disc as well as PC support that the 2002 model does not.
Also of note is the fact that this version of Action Replay Max does not include a free memory card that has become standard on the newer releases. Given that this version is now several years old, you'll have to download codes for new release games using a network adapter or PC and an Internet connection.
Action Replay Max also includes DVD, MP3, media center, etc. support, but I found these novelties of little interest. Cheat codes definitely aren't for everybody, but for folks with a library of early PS2 titles, this version of Action Replay should have codes for most of the games you have.
The real problem with this release of Action Replay Max is that it's getting old. People looking for instant access to the latest cheat codes will want to buy something newer. On the plus side, you can easily find this release new for $5-$10 now, so it won't cost you much as all.
It all comes down to being an educated consumer. This product does have a lot to offer for its minimal asking price, and if you have Internet access and don't mind downloading newer codes, it can do most of what the latest version can anyway. If you have a good idea of what you're getting before purchase, you'll probably be quite happy with the results.
